Progress report _ motherhood

Little Anton Christiaan Derksen was born on 12/03/203 and is now just about 15 months old and it is hard to imagine that he was not always a part of our household! The past 15 months have been all consuming with immense love and devotion to this little prince of ours! He is my happy-go-lucky, smiling paw paw and even though he is a bit like a tornado meets hurricane I love the life he brings into my life!

Motherhood came very easily and naturally for me, but this does not mean that I didn't face a few challenges and obstacles along the way. Relationships changed, work changed, routines changed, ultimately I changed and suddenly my life had to revolve around keeping a little baby happy and healthy. A task I did (and still do) with 100% enthusiasm and love. A task that became my way of life and that made me reconnect with who I am, where I want to be and what I want to do, because suddenly I had to prioritise and plan well if I wanted to do something or go somewhere.
Apart from the extra amount of love and warmth that Anton brought into our lives, he also brought a change to our household dynamic. The husband and I have been together for almost 10 years now and ultimately we had to learn a new dance too. As parents I would say we are doing a good job and I am certain that our relationship has, since Anton's arrival, also blossomed into a more mature "grownup" companionship. As I mentioned in my previous post - he is still my one and only, my most favouritist man.

I so often think back to the time that I just found out that I was pregnant, seeing the first scan of this new life, feeling the baby moving and kicking for the first time and giving birth to a beautiful, perfect little boy and all I can say is WOW! what an amazing experience, but when I thought that there could be nothing better than that experience I could not have been more wrong!
Anton is an ongoing work of art, a little miracle, a ray of sunshine, an entertainer, a bundle of joy - my crown prince and I absolutely LOVE being this little creature's mother!

Cheers to new beginnings

I always find it fascinating to see two people fall in love, but to see people fall in love and then to watch that relationship grow into a solid friendship and companionship is truly special! I've had the privilege to see two close friends do exactly this, so when I received their "save the date" reminder for their wedding later this year, yesterday I was filled with excitement and happiness for the pair!

If the "save the date" reminder can capture their relationship so perfectly I cannot wait to see what the wedding will be like!

Rob and Carina, I am wishing you guys happiness, love and laughter in the wedding planning process and I hope that the two of you will find comfort in your relationship and everyday life that you are choosing together!

Cheers to new beginnings and happiness!

Believing in love

I stumbled onto some very sweet tiny love stories this morning and found it inspiring and fresh, perhaps it makes you believe in that forever-love-affair again...

Today, my 75-year-old grandpa who has been blind from cataracts for almost 15 years said to me, “Your grandma is just the most beautiful thing, isn’t she?” I paused for a second and said, “Yes she is. I bet you miss seeing that beauty on a daily basis.” “Sweety,” my grandpa said, “I still see her beauty every day. In fact, I see it more now than I used to when we were young.”

Today is our 10th anniversary, but since my husband and I are both recently unemployed we agreed not to get each other any gifts. When I woke up this morning, my husband was already up. I walked downstairs to find beautiful wild flowers brilliantly arranged all over the house. There must be 400 flowers total and he didn’t spend a dime.

Today, I was driving home with my grandfather when he suddenly made a u-turn and said, “I forgot to get your grandmother a bouquet of flowers. I’ll pick up one from the florist at the corner down here. It’ll only take a second.” “What’s so special about today that you have to buy her flowers?” I asked. “There’s nothing specifically special about today,” my grandfather said. “Every day is special. Your grandmother loves flowers. They put a smile on her face.”

Today, exactly 10 years ago almost to the minute, I stopped at an intersection and a car rear ended me. The driver was a student at UF, just like me. He was cordial and apologetic. As we waited for the cops and the tow truck we chatted and started laughing together about all sorts of stuff. We exchanged numbers and the rest is history. We just celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary.

Today, when I tapped the side of my wheelchair and told my husband, “You’re the only reason I want to be free from this contraption,” he kissed me on my forehead and said, “Honey, I don’t even see that thing.”

If you enjoyed reading these tiny love stories visit the Marc and Angel Hack Life blog and read some more, I spent a good 20 minutes reading some of these tales and it made me smile!!

Two years and counting

Today, two years ago, I celebrated my AMAZING wedding day with the one I love!

A big festive affair with family and friends that are special and dear to us, but it was the man standing by my side on that day that marked it as the special beginning of a happy and wonderful life together!

This is a short video clip that a friend made as a wedding gift... I don't think I will ever grow tired of viewing this!

Thank you husband for being the WONDERFUL man that you are!!!

How you know you love him...

This is a bit of a read, but soooo worth it. Perhaps this confirms your feelings for someone or maybe it makes you realise that you've settled for less, either way read it and be inspired to love and do more for the one you love!!

How I Know I Love You

Aug. 21, 2012

I know I love you because I want to get you soup when you’re sick. Not only do I want to get it for you, I want to make it for you so you can eat something made with love instead of with crushed insects and preservatives. I know I love you because I want to slap anyone who hurts you, even if it’s your boss. I want to hold you when you’re having a nightmare and kiss the spot that hurts when you bump into something. I know I love you because I want you to be healthy even when you’re not sick, and that’s why I keep bugging you to change your crappy eating ways even though I know you’re over hearing about it.

I know I love you because I worry about the stuff only people who love you worry about, like the amount of quality sleep you get a night and how much you drink when you’re sad and whether you’re getting enough vitamin B. Like probably more than your mom does, I’m not sure she especially cares about vitamin B. I know I love you because I freak out when you’re obviously disintegrating yet too stubborn and too “I’m fine” to actually go to the doctor, even though I do that sort of thing myself.

I know I love you because I think you’re beautiful even when you’re not. And I don’t mean good-looking, I mean beautiful, beautiful like there’s something pervasive and magnetic about you that comes through even when you look positively bad.  I know I love you because I think you’re beautiful even when you’re wearing Crocs and that’s no small accomplishment.

I know I love you because I want to listen, I really do. I don’t have anywhere to be that can’t wait for a while and I’m not checking my phone, in fact turned it off and buried it in the cushions the moment you said you needed me. I’m here for you and that other thing can wait.

I know I love you because I’m truly concerned with how your life turns out. It’s not just that I want you to “be happy” or attain that vague self-helpy “inner peace” bullshit we’re all supposed to aspire toward, I want you to express yourself and be fulfilled and feel like you’re living life for a good reason, not just passing the time. I want everything to work out for you the way it should and I want to be there for it, occasionally with champagne.

And I’m genuinely convinced that I love you because I want to do things for you that I don’t want to do for anyone, ever. Examples: I’ll babysit your loud sticky children when you have them.  I’ll even stand there patiently with a video camera as you attach piranhas to your nipples when you’re broke and trying to get on Jackass, all that and more. That’s how I know I love you, and I hope you know it too.

Life is beautiful

Bad luck, bad news, bad experiences… these are things we cannot control.

Good attitude, great humour and a smile in bad weather are the things that can change lives.

I must apologise for being so quiet dear readers! The acts of reading, writing, working,  nursing, caring and loving are still completely out of sinc and I believe that from next week I will settle into a new routine and post more regularly again.

For now I am still in Stellenbosch and at my parents disposal… looking forward to new adventures to start soon though!

Monday madness at the office and after a really good weekend, all I can think of is next weekend!

Celebrating one year

I celebrated my one year wedding anniversary yesterday. Wow, time sure flies when you're having fun!

Thanks husband for a lovely year filled with laughs, happiness, joy, fun and wonderful moments.

I can't believe it has already been a year since our very special wedding day! We got married on the beautiful Bosman Family Vineyards Estate in Wellington and there is absolutely nothing that I would do differently if I could have the day over again.

Our first dance...sigh... what a lovely night!

Made with love

To me, cooking and entertaining guests is a form of art. Its all about the experience. From the moment the guests arrive you have to make them feel comfortable and welcome and when they leave the taste of yummy food and great conversations must still linger in their minds. This is what sets the stage for their next visit.
I am fond of entertaining, cooking and trying new recipes, but today I thought I'd focus on the little bit of love that needs to be added to make any dish, any cup of coffee, any toasted cheese sandwich or any Sunday roast just that little bit more special.

Consider a chicken soup made with love:
